Facebook has announced changes to the protocol for designating ads that relate to social issues, elections, or politics. These changes are intended to further bolster election integrity while also improving ad transparency. The updates will apply to the Marketing API v7.0.
The first change is that related ad campaigns will be required to be categorized at the campaign level as a Special Ad Categories selection. Previously campaigns only had to be designated at the ad level. Facebook noted that “Advertisers can do this by passing ISSUES_ELECTIONS_POLITICS in the field special_ad_categories in Marketing API v7.0 and above… With this change, advertisers will label all their ads in a campaign as about social issues, elections, or politics.”
Additionally, campaign managers can now select multiple special ad categories. This will allow for a more accurate indication of the content. Users can select up to four categories from the total options (housing, employment, credit, and social issues, elections, or politics.)
