This year at IAA 2019, an international motor show hosted in Frankfurt, Germany, Mercedes-Benz announced a new Mobile SDK that the company hopes third-parties will use to enhance the customer experience for owners using the Mercedes Me mobile application. The auto manufacturer announced the SDK by allowing a select group of developers to work with it at a 24-hour hackathon during IAA 2019.
The current Mercedes Me mobile application is able to do many things, including switching on auxiliary heating from anywhere and find roadside parking spaces in real-time based on the users’ location. The new SDK was inspired by companies like Apple that have used application ecosystems to improve overall app quality and encourage creative usage of resources. Britta Seeger, a Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG noted that:
“…We feel sure that the large global developer community has the potential to come up with a host of creative and innovative ideas for new Mercedes Me offerings that will delight our customers in future”
The hackathon hosted by Mercedes-Benz featured 60 developers in 12 teams. The teams were tasked with using the Mercedes-Benz Mobile SDK to design the most innovative service possible in under 24 hours. The winning team, CleanAI, used the SDK to integrate its proprietary dirt & hazard detection service into the Mercedes Me application.
The company understands that providing third-party developers with information that includes fuel level and the mileage driven, comes with inherent security risks. In light of recent data breaches, it is good to hear that Mercedes-Benz is taking security seriously. Sajjad Khan, Executive Vice President, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars, highlighted that the company is following the latest recommendations of the BSI (the German Federal Office for Information Security).
