Winning the digital transformation race: Three emerging approaches for leading transition

New research from Professor Feng Li, Chair of Information Management at City’s Business School has outlined three new approaches that digital innovators can take to reduce the risk of failure and seize competitive advantage in the industry.

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing many organisations to operate remotely, adoption of the latest secure technologies has taken on greater importance for many industries — presenting great opportunities for providers of these technologies, but also great challenges of meeting demand, staying ahead of competition and surviving in a fast-moving environment.

Professor Li interviewed senior leaders at eight global digital champions including Amazon, VMWare, Slack, Alibaba and Baidu to find out what their strategies were for innovation.

The findings can be summarised into three main approaches that are emerging:

  • Innovation by experimentation: a continual process of developing ideas on a small scale without high upfront investment, and then leveraging and rapidly scaling up those that turn out to be successful.
  • Radical transformation through incremental approaches: breaking up large scale projects into strategic investments with measuring capability at each stage allows companies to radically innovate several projects at once in small steps. This method also mitigates the risk of a single large project failing and allows businesses to judge which projects will yield the highest returns or biggest impact on investment.
  • Dynamic sustainable advantages through portfolios of temporary advantages: due to the fast-paced nature of the digital economy, competitive advantages are often short-lived. Implementing a strategy for successive and incremental temporary advantages can yield significant long-term gains.

All three strategies use elements of diversification and portfolio management to mitigate costs of failure, as is often seen in investor portfolios.

Professor Li said the nature of digital innovation lent itself to a highly dynamic approach.

“Digital technology is a highly volatile, fast-paced sector,” he said.

“It is important for companies in the field to recognise that competitive advantages are short-lived, and that there is no ‘end-point’ for innovation. Throwing all your weight behind one project as a start-to-end activity is highly risky and serves little long-term benefit even if successful.

“Sustainability can only be achieved by continuously reinventing the wheel while seeking new investment opportunities.

“The coronavirus pandemic has both challenged and opened doors of opportunity to traditionally non-digital organisation to innovate methods of banking, education and even living room gym classes.

“This is placing added pressure on industry incumbents to stay ahead of new disruptors, putting further emphasis on the need to have new irons in the fire and the ability to change direction quickly and efficiently between innovations.”

SmartStream Technologies Adds API for its Financial Transaction Lifecycle Management Solution

SmartStream Technologies, a financial Transaction Lifecycle Management solutions provider, today extended its Reference Data Utility Securities Financing Transactions Regulation service to include an API for firms requiring fast access to the technology and data needed to manage their reference data challenges – critical for meeting the ESMA SFTR reporting deadline of July 13th.

With the addition of the API, firms have quick access to new tools to manage their SFTR compliance needs. This enables them to reduce implementation time for deploying the key components for sourcing accurate, comprehensive and easy-to-access reference data. Importantly, a speedy onboarding process allows firms to be up and running with the service within 24 hours.

The RDU SFTR service can easily integrate as a value-added service to an established solution, or it can be the start of a control framework specifically targeted at reference data for SFTR obligations.

The technology assist firms to validate reference data content during the final weeks of testing before the regulatory deadline – whether that involves filling data gaps, resolving exceptions, not having full issuer to ISIN LEI coverage, or helping firms to avoid counterparty breaks and rejected reports.

Linda Coffman, EVP, SmartStream RDU, commented; “In response to the adverse developments resulting from the Coronavirus outbreak, ESMA made the bold decision to postpone the original deadline for the SFTR reporting obligations. Despite having an additional three-month window to prepare, we have found that many firms need extra help to get them across the finish line. We understand the pressures of meeting regulatory obligations, and we are providing easily accessible technology which focusses on key SFTR reference data attributes.” She continued; “Clients who have implemented the RDU SFTR solution are confident in the strength and accuracy of the data returned, and can be confident that it aligns with regulatory requirements. In addition, they appreciate the subject matter expertise we provide in monitoring the regulation and delivering insights into data trends.”

The reference data used by the SFTR service is acquired by the SmartStream RDU from a broad range of industry sources, before being normalized, enriched and mapped, on a single platform, into the format required by the regulator

Hoss Launches New API Monitoring Platform

Hoss, a Y-combinator backed startup, launched an API tracking and management platform today. The platform allows companies to track, monitor, and manage all the APIs consumed by their business across the board. Hoss built its platform because of the ever-increasing use of APIs across business and overwhelming issues related to those same businesses not having visibility into the performance of the APIs consumed.

“We are acutely aware that we are launching our solution during a unique moment in history when effective API tracking and management is more critical than ever to keep deliveries, online transactions, and contact-free interactions running smoothly,” Matt Hawkins, Hoss CEO and co-founder, commented in a company announcement. “Even outside of a global pandemic, 83% of all web traffic can be attributed to APIs, and the wide array of APIs that businesses consume continues to become more varied and complex.”

Hoss points to a report that around half of companies that knowingly utilize APIs don’t track them. Further, all signs point that API adoption will only continue to increase across businesses of all industries. Given these trends, the Hoss teams find it imperative that companies have better insight into the APIs they rely on.

The Hoss platform is available in a freemium model. The platform includes insight into API performance, error alerts, debugging assistance, and more. Learn more by signing up for a free account.

Altitude Angel announces Surveillance API

Altitude Angel, an unmanned traffic management tech provider, has announced a surveillance API. Through the API, integrators can share and receive flight data. The data comes from sensors and other devices in close to real-time so a genuine picture of covered airspace is seen.

“By offering our surveillance API to developers and manufacturers, we’re taking another significant step towards providing a single-point-source-of-truth which is needed to realise routine, automated drone flights,” Richard Parker, Altitude Angel CEO and founder, commented. “By using this API, implementors can benefit from the tremendous ‘fusion’ capability in the system and will receive enhanced position data back. Data can then be routed into other functions offered by the GuardianUTM cloud platform, including tactical conflict resolution and Airspace Alerts.”

The company expects the API to be used by commercial drone manufacturers, flight app developers, and drone fleet operators. These users will push position reports to Altitude Angel for distribution through the API. When the Altitude Angel data is supplemented with other data in the network, a holistic view of the sky arises.

Position reports are only available from users that have registered and been authenticated with the API. The data collection infrastructure is intended for use by drone detection sensors, ATM sensors (e.g. radar), and software developers that can connect observed vehicles. Porting.com Releases PortControl API to Assist Carriers with Number Porting

Porting.com, the leading independent provider of carrier-grade number management solutions, today announced the release of PortControl, the newest API-centric, cloud-based platform to assist carriers with local number porting (LNP) and number management.

Unlike legacy number porting solutions, which only address specific parts of the LNP process and often require businesses to subscribe to numerous products, PortControl offers one platform that allows carriers to:

  • Explore and query real-time local and toll-free number information
  • Access contact and trading partner profile (TPP) data for both SPIDs and RespOrgs
  • Easily manage their network and determine number portability with one-click
  • Have LRNs auto-assigned when building NPAC records, using an Order-based workflow
  • Subscribe to LSMS updates and have them pushed to your local database in real-time

“Our goal is to help our customers unlock the power of simple, cloud-based number management solutions in a cost-effective, reliable way,” said Alex Eastwood, Product Owner at Porting.com. “Our continued releases throughout 2020 will help not only our customers, but carriers across the industry modernize and streamline their local number porting processes to the benefit of our collective industry ecosystem. We believe that PortControl will unite carriers — allowing them to seamlessly exchange numbers with one another, effectively reducing porting time and complexity for both their business and the end user.”

PortControl’s API-based capabilities automatically identify the gaining carrier’s supporting LRNs, as well the SPIIDs of the losing carrier(s). This allows users to create requests with multiple telecom carriers in a single transaction and ensures that any porting-related data is accurate and reduces the potential for errors — improving the customer’s experience as they transition to the winning carrier’s network.

In addition, Porting.com will be adding support for customer service record (CSR) and local service request (LSR) management in PortControl starting in Q2 of this year. Wireline number porting continues to pose a challenge to telecommunications providers as they grow and scale to meet customer demand, due primarily to the fact that many carrier-specific systems have not been updated in over a decade. As a result, porting teams are forced to grow linearly, as the manual labor associated with LNP never changes. By automating the CSR/LSR process and accessing free APIs, carriers will be able to integrate into the PortControl ecosystem and manage the entire number porting process from start to finish.
