ThinPrint Launches API for Cloud Printing Services

ThinPrint‘s cloud printing solution, ezeep, today launched its developer API, which enables easy integration of its cloud printing services for any device or platform. Software developers and companies which previously relied on Google Cloud Print, which will be discontinued at the end of the year, can now migrate their apps to ezeep, without the need for cloud printing expertise.

In contrast to Google Cloud Print, which never evolved out of its beta stage, ezeep has been designed from the outset to fully meet the needs of enterprise customers. The announcement of the ezeep API allows software developers and enterprises to highly automate and streamline backend and web applications in terms of printing. Business processes can then be accelerated significantly. Since ezeep also handles all print rendering in the cloud, hardware requirements at the endpoints can be reduced, saving considerable costs in terms of procurement and maintenance. Technically complex issues, such as communication with the printer or converting documents into all printer languages, are handled by the ezeep cloud.

“Enabling apps to print with our API, is not a piecemeal process, or a tool conceived for individual users, but part of an enterprise-wide cloud printing solution that can be used for all devices and platforms,” says Christoph Hammer, Senior Vice President Cloud Services at ThinPrint. “Possible applications range from restaurant chains or delivery services which print orders placed online to cloud storage, or CRM systems that want to enable managed printing for their corporate customers. The possibilities are boundless.”

SpyCloud Introduces Password Exposure API

SpyCloud, an account takeover prevention solution provider, has announced its new Password Exposure API. The API allows users to comply with new NIST guidelines while preventing online fraud with a seamless user experience.

“Consumers today are managing hundreds of online accounts and logins,” Chip Witt, SpyCloud Vice President of Product Management, commented in a press release. “Rotating through a few favorite passwords that they reuse everywhere or only tweaking them by a character or two is very common. Cybercriminals take advantage of these password shortcuts and will test lists of stolen credentials against thousands of online accounts to break in and make purchases, steal funds and conduct other fraudulent activity, which can damage a company’s business and reputation.”

New NIST guidelines prevent organizations from allowing weak, common, and previously exposed passwords. The new SpyCloud API enhances organizations’ ability to comply with this new standard. Security teams can leverage the API to programmatically check for non-compliant passwords at scale.

When a password appears in the SpyCloud database, that password is available to cybercriminals. The Password Exposure API detects if passwords have appeared in that database and how many times they have appeared. Uses can set a threshold for how many times is acceptable before change is required. SpyCloud uses k-anonymity to check password matches against the database. Only the first five characters of any password are sent via the network to help protect the password. SpyCloud never has access to an entire password.

Cloudian Announces New Support for Container-Based Apps

Cloudian, an object storage solution provider, has announced support for container-based apps. The new product, Cloudian Kubernetes S3 Operator, is a self-service tool that allows developers to dynamically provision Cloudian HyperStore S3-compatible object storage. The new product extends Cloudian’s existing and growing support for cloud-native environments.

“Containers enable enterprises to develop new services more quickly, but traditional storage wasn’t designed for these modern workloads,” Sanjay Jagad, Cloudian senior director of products and solutions, commented in a press release. “So while other storage providers are pushing complex, management-heavy products based on legacy platforms, Cloudian delivers simplicity itself: the industry’s most compatible S3 API and a lightweight Kubernetes operator. Developers gain self-serve agility and application portability, while operations teams benefit from Cloudian’s exabyte scalability, hybrid cloud management and exceptional value.”

Cloudian Kubernetes S3 Operator is deployed on Cloudian’s HyperStore object storage platform. It includes API driven management for fast provisioning. Other features include:

Researchers develop dustbuster for the moon

A team led by the University of Colorado Boulder is pioneering a new solution to the problem of spring cleaning on the moon: Why not zap away the grime using a beam of electrons?

The research, published recently in the journal Acta Astronautica, marks the latest to explore a persistent, and perhaps surprising, hiccup in humanity’s dreams of colonizing the moon: dust. Astronauts walking or driving over the lunar surface kick up huge quantities of this fine material, also called regolith.

“It’s really annoying,” said Xu Wang, a research associate in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at CU Boulder. “Lunar dust sticks to all kinds of surfaces — spacesuits, solar panels, helmets — and it can damage equipment.”

So he and his colleagues developed a possible fix — one that makes use of an electron beam, a device that shoots out a concentrated (and safe) stream of negatively-charged, low-energy particles. In the new study, the team aimed such a tool at a range of dirty surfaces inside of a vacuum chamber. And, they discovered, the dust just flew away.

“It literally jumps off,” said lead author Benjamin Farr, who completed the work as an undergraduate student in physics at CU Boulder.

The researchers still have a long way to go before real-life astronauts will be able to use the technology to do their daily tidying up. But, Farr said, the team’s early findings suggest that electron-beam dustbusters could be a fixture of moon bases in the not-too-distant future.

Spent gunpowder

The news may be music to the ears of many Apollo-era astronauts. Several of these space pioneers complained about moon dust, which often resists attempts at cleaning even after vigorous brushing. Harrison “Jack” Schmitt, who visited the moon as a member of Apollo 17 in 1972, developed an allergic reaction to the material and has said that it smelled like “spent gunpowder.”

The problem with lunar dust, Wang explained, is that it isn’t anything like the stuff that builds up on bookshelves on Earth. Moon dust is constantly bathed in radiation from the sun, a bombardment that gives the material an electric charge. That charge, in turn, makes the dust extra sticky, almost like a sock that’s just come out of the drier. It also has a distinct structure.

“Lunar dust is very jagged and abrasive, like broken shards of glass,” Wang said.

The question facing his group was then: How do you unstick this naturally clingy substance?

Electron beams offered a promising solution. According to a theory developed from recent scientific studies of how dust naturally lofts on the lunar surface, such a device could turn the electric charges on particles of dust into a weapon against them. If you hit a layer dust with a stream of electrons, Wang said, that dusty surface will collect additional negative charges. Pack enough charges into the spaces in between the particles, and they may begin to push each other away — much like magnets do when the wrong ends are forced together.

“The charges become so large that they repel each other, and then dust ejects off of the surface,” Wang said.

Electron showers

To test the idea, he and his colleagues loaded a vacuum chamber with various materials coated in a NASA-manufactured “lunar simulant” designed to resemble moon dust.

And sure enough, after aiming an electron beam at those particles, the dust poured off, usually in just a few minutes. The trick worked on a wide range of surfaces, too, including spacesuit fabric and glass. This new technology aims at cleaning the finest dust particles, which are difficult to remove using brushes, Wang said. The method was able to clean dusty surfaces by an average of about 75-85%.

“It worked pretty well, but not well enough that we’re done,” Farr said.

The researchers are currently experimenting with new ways to increase the cleaning power of their electron beam.

But study coauthor Mihály Horányi, a professor in LASP and the Department of Physics at CU Boulder, said that the technology has real potential. NASA has experimented with other strategies for shedding lunar dust, such as by embedding networks of electrodes into spacesuits. An electron beam, however, might be a lot cheaper and easier to roll out.

Horányi imagines that one day, lunar astronauts could simply leave their spacesuits hanging up in a special room, or even outside their habitats, and clean them after spending a long day kicking up dust outside. The electrons would do the rest.

“You could just walk into an electron beam shower to remove fine dust,” he said.

Other coauthors on the new research include John Goree of the University of Iowa and Inseob Hahn and Ulf Israelsson of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Automotive Titling Corporation Launches Granular Fees API

Automotive Titling Corporation (ATC), title and registration data solution provider, has launched its ATC Granular Fees (AGF) API. The API provides users the ability to calculate tax rates, taxable value calculations, local flat taxes, and registration fees at a granular level. By “granular”, ATC means the level of detail that mirrors DMV receipts.

“ATC leads the in-state and out-of-state titling and registration services industry,” Damon Bennett, VP, Business Development for ATC, commented in a press release. “And with the ATC Granular Fees API, we’re able to drill down to the most granular level of registration fees and taxes, so our customers can have the most accurate information possible.”

API users can dynamically choose level of fees for the API response. That includes over a hundred fees in various jurisdictions. The fees can be broken down per line item or aggregated into a single number. It includes supporting data (e.g. differences from location to location). The API also covers certain qualification data (e.g. requirements for military waivers).

The API is RESTful. ATC authenticates and verifies title and registration data on a daily basis. DMV requirements are continually incorporated into the API backend. Novel magnetic stirrer speaks to lab equipment

A current problem for a wide range of chemists is when stirring a solution in the laboratory there is a need to check the properties of the solution and monitor how they change.

In the paper, ‘Monitoring chemistry in situ with the Smart Stirrer — a magnetic stirrer bar with an integrated process monitoring system’ published in the journal ACS Sensors, researchers from the School of Engineering, the Mathematics Institute and WMG at the University of Warwick present their innovative stirrer sensor.

The small device, called “Smart Stirrer,” performed a function of a conventional laboratory stir bar, has an integrated microprocessor and various sensors capable of wireless and autonomous report the conversion of properties of a solution. The advanced sensor stir bar is a capsule shaped magnet encased in plastic.

A beaker filled with a solution is placed on a platform that generates a rotating magnetic field, when the magnetic stirrer is placed in the solution it continuously rotates stirring the liquid.

The Smart Stirrer then monitors:

    – Colour

    – Transparency

    – Conductivity

    – Viscosity

    – Temperature

Results are sent to a computer over Bluetooth, and any changes notify the user wirelessly. Although the idea of using magnetic stir bar with integrated sensors may not be entirely new, this new affordable, multi-sensor and easy programmable stirrer sensor device is first in its kind.

The concept is valuable to Research and Design laboratories and pharmaceutical and chemistry manufacturing industries because it allows wireless monitoring of several parameters of a chemical reaction simultaneously

Dr Dmitry Isakov, from WMG at the University who led the study comments:

“We are still continuing research into the stirrer, the next revision of the stirrer sensor that will be smaller size and with a bit more sophisticated sensors. We are collaborating with several chemists from Warwick University. This will help us to understand their needs and help to improve the device.

“The beauty of the Smart Stirrer is that it can be used everywhere, such as a sealed vessels thus minimising the contamination of the reactor. It may give a push to new discoveries as well. It is easy to integrate the stirrer into the labware family and make it “speak” to other lab equipment.”

Samuel Baldwin, from the Mathematics institute at the University of Warwick worked on the smart stirrer during his WMG summer internship, he comments:

“I have found every stage of development of the Smart Stirrer to be very fulfilling, from circuit design, to manufacturing to finally programming. We have leveraged state-of-the-art technology to build a device with very low power consumption, a broad range of sensor capabilities, and high data-throughput over the Bluetooth Low Energy platform.

“The laboratory of the future is that of automation, reproducibility and safety; our all-in-one Smart Stirrer device eliminates the need for a vast array of individual wired sensors whilst maintaining the control and customisability that one would expect from any piece of advanced laboratory equipment. I look forward to seeing the Smart Stirrer solve laboratory problems and help us understand complex reactions.”

Coinbase Announces New Open Source Specification: Rosetta

Coinbase, a blockchain solution provider, announced the launch of Rosetta. Rosetta is an open-source specification and set of associated tools that help developers integrate blockchain into the applications and systems. Since its founding, Coinbase has preached the need for openness and economic freedom, and Rosetta is the next logical step towards that reality.

“Coinbase initially developed Rosetta as the middleware used to integrate blockchains into its platform securely and painlessly, and today we’re sharing it with the world in the hopes it can ease development and integration time for both developers and crypto platforms alike,” Surojit Chatterjee, Coinbase Chief Product Officer, commented in a blog post announcement.

Blockchain has exploded in recent years. While its growth has helped the world move towards open systems and financial freedom that Coinbase aspires to, the many disparate solutions have led to some confusion. IntelligenceBank Launches Automated Workflow System: Handshakes

IntelligenceBank, a provider of marketing operations software for content marketers, has announced a new solution that extends the capabilities of the company’s API.
